                                                                                                                                           SMLA Lake Committee

The Lake Committee of the Smith Mountain Lake Association is charged with addressing those issues that directly impact the environmental health of Smith Mountain Lake.  It is made up of various sub-committees that look at different aspects of the lake's health.  The committee is made up of the members of the sub-committees, and is chaired by an overall chairman who reports to the Board of Directors of SMLA.  The committee meets each month, or as needed, to review the activities of the individual sub-committees with an objective of providing guidance and help to the individual sub-committees.  The public is always welcome and encouraged to attend these meetings.  Meeting times and dates are posted on the web site and at the SMLA office.

  • Debris Prevention Programs
  • Buffer Gardens
  • Islands Preservation

 

New initiatives that need chairpersons;

  • Invasive Species Tracking and monitoring to see where invasives, i.e., zebra mussels, snake head fish, etc., are currently established in our surrounding area, and what we should be doing to prevent them from entering SML.
  • Sampling sediment content in the upper reaches of the Roanoke arm of the lake due to detect potential problems with disturbance of it during high water flow times.
