Smithfield Rescue Mission is a non-profit charitable organization sometimes known as an “arm” of the church. It's purpose is to give a hand up to the hungry, hurting, and homeless of the Johnston County area, as well as to stranded travelers. Temporary shelter is provided for men at The Glad Tidings Shelter and for women and children at the Good Neighbor House.
In-house services include: lodging, meals, clothing, laundry, personal care items, Bibles, Christian literature, gospel services, and self-help classes.
The method of service is 3-fold:
1) Salvation: To guide him/her to a right relationship with God through the gospel of Jesus Christ.
2)Restoration: To provide opportunities to regain what has been lost through unfortunate circumstances or unwise decisions, with the goal of achieving a productive lifestyle.
3)Mentoring: To assist in the educational and mental process of rediscovering values necessary for personal well-being.
When there are resources and manpower available, the mission reaches beyond the shelters to share with other needy neighbors. A gospel service is held weekly at Smithfield House West, and small gifts are distributed to residents on special occasions. Food and gifts are distributed to needy families during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Food boxes are also given in an emergency.
