What is Sustainability?

There are many definitions out there. Here are a few:

Sustainability is meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. - Brundtland Report

Sustainability is equity over time ... think of it as extending the Golden rule through time .. Do unto future generations as you would have them do unto you. - Robert Gilman

Leave the world better than you found it, take no more than you need, try not to harm life or the environment, make amends if you do. - Paul Hawken

Our Mission

Sustainability Week aims to educate and motivate our campus community to live a more sustainable lifestyle.

This event offers a unique opportunity to learn about issues such as sustainable food systems, green transportation and energy, waste management, composting, resource conservation, biodiversity and climate change. There will be guest speakers, panel discussions, workshops, movies, and Earth Day!

SJSU Earth Day is April 22nd! - 03/09/09
On April 22, the ERC will host Earth Day 2009. Earth Day 2008 had about 50 exhibitors and displays, this year the ERC hopes to do the same and better. Earth Day will be held from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm in the 7th Street Plaza on Campus at San Jose State and will include a plethora of sustainable businesses, organizations, non-profits, and government agencies who all want to show off their amazing achievements. In addition, the ERC plans to give tables to individuals who want to show off their own, do-it-yourself projects to help prove to visitors that sustainability is something that can easily become part of your own life! Come join the ERC and visit Earth Day 2009. Check out the Official Earth Day 2009 Flier!
