Course Description

The Information Literacy Unit is a part of all 9th grade English courses and fulfills multiple state English, technology, and library standards. During a two week period, students will attempt to answer the question, “What does it mean to be information literate in the 21st Century?”  The unit is designed to teach the research process and develop information literacy skills. Students will then be required to apply these skills to create an annotated bibliography at the end of the unit.  Ultimately, the students will be able to transfer these skills in every research assignment they receive for the rest of their academic careers, and will be able to apply the research process for personal information needs and decisions.

Basic Expectations

1.      Students will attend 10 sessions in the Library/Media center to receive direct instruction from the Teacher-Librarians (Mrs. Synk and Ms. Pekar)

2.      All classroom expectations and SJA Handbook rules and consequences will be followed. This includes the Dress Code policy.

3.      Each student is required to bring her A Pocket Style Manual (purchased from the SJA bookstore), Information Literacy folder, and pens/pencils to each class. A jump/flash drive is highly recommended.

4.      Each student will be responsible for maintaining a “glossary” of information literacy terms in her folder.

5.      Student work will be graded by the Teacher-Librarians, and the Classroom Teacher will record them in PowerSchool each week.
