Human Trafficking Working Group - SIHRG

Human Trafficking

With reports estimating that up to 1.2 million children (not to mention countless adults) are trafficked for sexual exploitation or cheap labour each year, the SIHRG Human Trafficking sub-group is working to tackle this form of modern-day slavery. The group is aiming to offer legal support to a local NGO working with sex trafficking victims, and conducts legal research for international NGOs working on trafficking issues. Members are also monitoring developments in domestic legislation which may impact trafficking issues.

Welcome To The Human Trafficking Working Group

Every Year Up To Two And A Half Million People Are Trafficked

The International Labour Organisation estimates that up to 2 1/2 million people are trafficked every year.  Around half of these are children.  Often lured with false promises of lucrative jobs away from their homes, people are bought and sold like animals. They are deceived or coerced into the most inhumane forms of work, often involving sexual exploitation, domestic servitude or exposure to dangerous working conditions in sweatshops, farms and quarries.

Trafficking violates the fundamental rights and the dignity and integrity of its victims, and undermines the values of democratic societies and the rule of law.

The SIHRG is working to tackle this "modern day slave trade" by:

- lobbying for more effective and victim-centred action to support trafficking victims and uphold their human rights: we recently submitted evidence to the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Human Rights' Inquiry into the rights of people trafficked into the UK and have submitted a response to the Home Office's current consultation on its Action Plan for tackling trafficking.

- providing research support to NGOs in the UK and overseas who are seeking to assist victims of trafficking and hold traffickers accountable for their actions

- collaborating with other NGOs which campaign on trafficking issues

SIHRG Gave Oral Evidence to Joint Committee on Human Rights

The SIHRG human trafficking working group was invited to give evidence to the Joint Committee on Human Rights' inquiry into trafficking at the Houses of Parliament on 5 June. SIHRG presented evidence in the same hearing as Amnesty International and the Immigration Law Practitioners' Association. We welcomed this opportunity to highlight the urgent need for the Government to sign the Council of Europe Convention on Trafficking and to improve the protection of victims here in the UK.
