The Americas

Welcome To The Americas Working Group

The Americas is a huge and diverse geographical region and the projects that the Americas sub-group is involved in cover a wide range of issues. The aims of the Americas sub-group are to raise awareness of the Human Rights issues in the Americas; provide legal support to groups already working in the field and develop initiatives from within the group.

The Americas sub-group has an interest in all the areas of the Americas and currently has links with NGOs in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico and the UK. The group’s present focus is on raising awareness of human rights issues in these regions and providing legal support to NGOs in the field particularly in relation to cases in the Inter-American system.

The Americas Group currently has five regional co-ordinators:

Rachel Towers - Mexico & Guatemala

Karen Mitchell - Colombia

Gwendolen Morgan - Central America

Rebecca Usner - Canada & USA

Thiago Cremasco - Brazil

The sub-group is always keen to welcome new members. Whilst linguistic skills are an advantage the sub-group is open to anyone with an interest in the Americas who would like to get involved. Please email Ana Paula de Souza at americas@sihrg.org

SIHRG’s working group on the Americas has launched research projects on indigenous rights and prisoner’s rights and are seeking volunteers

Through contact with NGOs and groups working on rights issues in the Americas, SIHRG’s working group on the Americas has identified a need for research to produce detailed and accessible information on the protection of rights relating to a number of key issues.

The working group plans to carry out a series of research projects over the coming years and has launched the first two projects this autumn with the aim of publishing the research and recommendations in summer 2009. The first two projects are on the use of environmental law to protect indigenous rights and the protection of prisoner’s rights throughout the Americas, details of the projects are below.

We are currently seeking volunteers to help carry out the research. Contact details for the project’s co-ordinators are provided below, please get in touch if you are interested in further information on the projects.
