The retreat, “Arriving at Base Camp” is a follow-up to “Navigating the Basic Skills Highway” held in April 2008. Featured presenters at this retreat will be Laura Hope, Dean of Academic Success at Chaffey College and Merrill Deming, faculty and counselor at Crafton Hills college. Both were instrumental in establishing Chaffey College’s Student Success Centers. These centers are credited with increasing student success rates at Chaffey and they have the data to support their claims. The Centers focus on working with instructors to develop Directed Learning Activities (DLA’s) that allow students to explore pre-requisite material that is necessary for success, or to work on assignments that will enrich their learning experience. These centers allow instructors to enhance learning with minimum impact on instructors’ time. The retreat is open to all faculty (part-time faculty are especially encouraged to attend), key student services staff, counselors , and administrators. It will be held at the Moreno Valley Golf Club on Moreno Beach Drive and begins Thursday, Oct. 29 from noon (lunch will be served)—6 PM and will conclude Friday from 9AM—1PM. An optional, non-RCC campout will be held at Lake Perris SRA on Friday evening. Join us around the campfire and let’s talk about how we can help our students (or maybe just roast marshmallows). Please contact Sheila Pisa at 571-6146 or sheila.pisa@rcc.edu to RSVP for the retreat. To make reservations for the campout go online to: http://www.reserveamerica.com/
