Reminding us that February is still winter time conditions were bitterly cold with the odd bit of snow fall this morning. The customary wind for the U18R arrived late but ensured the last few riders got a bit of extra help on the return leg. In the 2up event last year's winners Alan Griffiths and Dave Rudland (Severn RC) had to make do with second some way behind convincing winners Tim Wood and Paul Osborne (Luk Racing.net) who's time of 55:06 belied the difficult conditions. Having recorded a 56:50 to win last year Alan & Dave, who have both been racing through the winter on the Newport track, went back two and half minutes to be the only other team inside the hour. Ian Woolford and Denis Connolly showed well for their new club with a third place 1:01:21 to give them the final podium place by just three seconds. Just five seconds separated third to fifth place.
The solo event saw several of the seeded riders fail to brave the more than chilly conditions but it was scratch man Nik Gardiner (timetrial.co.uk) who impressed with a winning 54:45 for the fastest ride of the day. Just over a minute slower was Somer Valley rider Richard Marsh who arrived with a bang last year when he won two of the early season Hardrider events but his 55:52 was only good enough for second place today. Proving he has wintered well Bristol South's Dave Keene, with Marsh, was the only other solo rider to beat all but the winning 2up team with a time of 56:53 which also made him the fastest veteran. With Julie Diben and Emma Silversides among the DNS'ers it was Gill Pears (Bath Amphibians) who took the ladies prize with a 1:10:45. Kyle Tilley (Luk Racing.net) was fastest of the under 18s with a 1:10:41. There was no prize for fastest team but had there been one it would have been a home win with new SRC man Alistair Coates leading Neil Cobbold and Trevor Roberts.
