Welcome to the Santa Clara County Optometric Society website! As a community of optometrists practicing in the Silicon Valley of the San Francisco Bay Area, we are dedicated to promoting and serving the profession of optometry.

Originally the Central Coast Optometric Society, a group of optometrists from the north, including Dr. Art Heinsen, Dr. Larry Foster, and Dr. Bert Hersch, investigated branching off of the CCOS in 1953.  The Santa Clara County Optometric Society was officially formed and approved by the California Optometric Association House of Delegates in 1954, and Dr. Goodloe Gilmer became the first president of SCCOS.

Although SCCOS started out as a small Society, we were politically active from the beginning.  Over the years, our influence in the profession has contributed to increasing our scope of practice and promoted our profession at the local and state level.  We have been privileged to have great leadership within the Society, and many have gone on to become presidents of the COA.  Most recently, Dr. David Redman, an SCCOS member practicing in Mountain View and San Jose, California, led the COA in 2008 in passing Senate Bill 1406, which increased California optometrists’ scope of practice to include treating glaucoma as well as removing restrictions on certain procedures.

In addition to political contributions to optometry, SCCOS members proudly serve the Bay Area in performing school vision screenings, volunteering at local health fairs, and providing education to the public about eye health and vision.  We look forward to continually serving the community and dedicating our time to promoting the profession.   Thank you for visiting!
