Welcome back to Quest! The Harvest family always strives for excellence and we had a Harvest family make a generous donation to our Quest program that will allow us more authentic experiences and opportunities. Cameron Crawford (a third grader at Harvest) and his family were so very generous to donate a 210 gallon fish tank to further enhance our science program. What an excellent way to learn about food chains, food webs, habitats, adaptation, producers, consumers, life cycles, and freshwater ecosystems than to have an authentic freshwater ecosystem in the classroom. That's right, we no longer have to rely on Google images of bluegill, perch, bowfin or spotted gars, we can observe first hand, free swimming, goldfish eating; habitat dwelling fishes of Michigan right in the Quest classroom.
What’s even more awesome is that we are fortunate to have our very own fish expert, Solomon David. He caught all the fish that we currently have in the tank and he has volunteered to continue to supply fish to the tank throughout the school year. Solomon David is a PhD student studying conservation of the spotted Gar in Michigan. He received his B.S. in Biology from Ohio Northern University and M.S. in Aquatic Sciences from the University of Michigan. He also specializes in the ecology & conservation of lungfishes, and bow fins. By the looks of his stats, he's highly qualified to be our fish expert.
As I stated above, the Harvest Family continually strive for excellence and excellence require volunteers. Throughout the entire summer, the Crawford family took on the responsibility of purchasing feeder fish, and maintaining the fish tank. However, we need to share the responsibilities and expenses required to maintain the tank for the upcoming school year. We’ll need more Harvest families to purchase and pickup feeder fish from the Fish Doctor store, which is located at 2703 Washtenaw, Ypsilanti, (734) 434-1030 and then deliver them to Quest each week. The feeders are about $7-10 a week (at this time, the Crawford family is buying 150 small goldfish, which go for $7 per 100). If you would like to donate feeder fish, check out the feeder sign-up link on my website to see which date is good for you, then email me or call me at ext. 5573 so that I can add your name to the feeder sign-up calendar. Instructions Thank you for your support.
With Much Appreciation, Linda McCormick |
