In
English class, we will be studying the Houghton Mifflin English program. The children will be presented a
yearlong series of comprehensive language arts activities that emphasize
correct grammar, usage, and mechanics of writing. Writing will be approached using a combination of the 6 + 1
Traits and Collins Writing models of developing and assessing writing. The 6 + 1 Traits looks at the following
characteristics of writing: ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence
fluency, conventions and presentation.
The Collins writing program encourages students to be responsible for
their own writing and learning. The cumulative writing folder documents your
child’s writing progress over the course of the year. It is very important your child’s folder and writing pieces
stay in school. At the end of the
school year, your child will have a wonderful writing keepsake.
