We use the Prentice-Hall Literature program, which
offers traditional and contemporary literary selections including: short
stories, drama, nonfiction, poetry, and complete novels. The program stresses active reading
strategies such as: questioning, predicting, clarifying, summarizing and
responding. Written assignments
will be assigned to help students apply and acquire new language skills. In addition, literature groups will be
formed when novels are assigned throughout the year.
Each
trimester, students will be expected to complete 3 book reports in specific
genres. A Reading Contract will be sent home explaining the requirements. To help measure comprehension skills, I
use the computerized program, Accelerated Reader, which customizes a reading
goal for each student. I also
encourage students to read daily for 20-30 minutes at home. Students will be expected to complete short
summaries and meet with me individually to discuss what they’ve read. Summer of the Monkeys theme song podcasts Click here to take the Reading Survey. |
