Problem of the Week
Tuesday, September 11, 2018
Grandpa is about to celebrate his sixty-third birthday. Your Uncle Pascal gives him 63 silver dollars and six empty bags. "You can keep the coins as a birthday present," he says, "but only if you can figure out how to arrange them in these six bags in such a way that you can subsequently choose any dollar amount from 1 to 63 by selecting one or more of these bags." Grandpa is perplexed. Can you help him arrange the coins in the six bags so as to meet Pascal's requirement? How should the coins be placed in the six bags?
