Problem of the Week

for Tuesday, October 6, 2015

In the game of Wiggle Room, two players, solid and stripes, take turns moving their counter. Each can move his counter as far to the left or right as he wishes with two restrictions. He can't move off the game board and he can't pass through or occupy the same square as his opponent's counter. The last player to make a legal move is the victor. You play "solid" and it is your turn. Given the position of the counters shown below, what opening move can you make to ensure victory against any and every opponent playing "stripe". Briefly describe your opening play and your subsequent strategy.
