Problem of the Week

for Tuesday October 13, 2015

In game two of Wiggle Room, two players, solid and stripes, take turns moving their counter. Each picks a row and then moves his counter in that row as far to the left or right as he wishes without passing through or occupying the same square as his opponent. The last player to make a legal move is the victor. You play "solid" and it is your turn. Given the position of the counters shown below, what opening move can you make to ensure victory against any and every opponent playing "stripe". Briefly describe your opening play and the subsequent strategy that will cause your opponent to run out of wiggle room.
