Problem of the Week

for Monday, October 27, 2009

Last week's puzzle was to chop a 5x5 square and a 4x6 rectangle into pieces to form a 7x7 square. Among the many excellent solutions that you found, one was particularly interesting because it involved only two different shapes- a 5x5 square and four copies of a 1x6 rectangle (shown below). But there are other solutions that use exactly five pieces of only two different shapes. Can you find any? One involves cutting, but NOT along the grid lines.
