Problem of the Week

Tuesday, March 21, 2017

In how many different ways can you choose a square that surrounds a smaller square that in turn surrounds an even smaller square. In the picture below on the left the answer is sixteen. The outside square must be large square itself which is marked "A" in the picture. There are four choices for the intermediate "B" size square, and for any of the four intermediate size squares, there remains a choice of four different small squares. Since 4x4 = 16, there is a total of sixteen different choices. In how many different ways can you choose a square within a square within a square for the picture on the right?
