Problem of the Week

January 21, 2020

Given an apple, a banana, and a cucumber, there are 5 different ways to place them in bags. You can put all 3 in one bag, all 3 in separate bags, or split them up into two bags, pairing ab, ac, or bc and leaving the third to be in a bag on its own. If we add d (a date) into the mix and now plan to place all 4 items into bags, how many different ways can we do this?
