Problem of the Week

Tuesday, December 19,2017

Andy, Betty, and Carol agree to the following secret Santa arrangement. All three of their names are put on a separate piece of paper, folded up, put in a hat, and drawn at random. They pick who they will buy a gift for in alphabetically order but if Andy picks his own name, he returns his name to the hat and picks another name. Same holds for Betty. Unfortunately, Carol, the last to pick, might have to buy a present for herself. What are the chances that Carol buys herself a present in this secret Santa arrangement?
