Splendor in the Grass, an award winning screenplay by William Inge, and adapted to the stage by Andrew Leslie, follows the difficult relationship of two young high school students living in 1920’s Kansas.
Good looking, a star athlete, and son of the richest man in town, Bud Stamper is the prize catch in his high school class, and Deanie Loomis is the girl lucky enough to get him. However, both Bud and Deanie are disturbed by the powerful feelings which have grown between them, and which are turned into torture by the restraints of proper conduct and their parents’ inability to guide them. Mindful of the bad example of his own debauched sister, Bud wants to marry Deanie immediately and go to agricultural school, a hope which is destroyed by his father’s ambitions to send him to Yale and then put him into the family oil business. Bud and Deanie promise to wait, and Bud decides that it is better for them to see less of each other in the meantime, a turn of events which plunges the unstable Deanie into an emotional spiral. By the time she recovers their worlds have changed: the stock market has crashed, Bud has decided to drop out of Yale, and Deanie and Bud must both face their past, to see where their future will take them.
