Hamilton Speaks about Economy, Calls for Policy Change

Fallbrook, CA - Robert J. Hamilton, Democratic candidate for the 49th Congressional Seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, talked to the North Central Democratic Club on Monday night, June 23rd about his position on the economy, with proposals on how to reverse the downward trend set in motion by the Bush administration.

Hamilton said, “Our national debt of over $9 trillion, and growing by over $1.5 billion per day, has weakened our economy and created a monumental tax burden for future generations. While the Bush administration has squandered billions on an unnecessary war and government mismanagement, Congress continues to be controlled by special interests.”

He discussed with the audience how our world is being challenged as never before by escalating demand for energy, food and other vital commodities. Of particular concern is the urgent need to develop alternatives to high priced oil. Hamilton said, “The Bush administration and my opponent Darrell Issa continue to call for more oil drilling to solve our energy problems while Germany, Brazil and other nations develop better solutions.”

“During the last seven years, our government has disengaged from programs to reduce global warming, ridiculed the need for conservation, undermined attempts to reduce oil consumption, and paid huge subsidies to oil companies while cutting subsidies for development of alternative sources of energy. I will work to reverse these misguided policies.”

The audience was concerned with many different issues regarding the economy.  Hamilton recommended several options for improving the economy including repair of our nation’s crumbling infrastructure and rail system, affordable healthcare for all Americans, and greater emphasis on support for small businesses instead of just the large corporations favored by the Bush administration and Darrell Issa.

Hamilton favors a “pay-go” policy where new spending programs must be paid for by cuts in other spending. “Just as individuals and families throughout our nation are coming to terms with the new, tougher economic landscape, our government needs to cut back spending to essentials, plan and invest for long-term growth, and execute the plan responsibly and competently.”
