The
Joan Bennett Stewart Scholarship Fund was started in 2007 with a
generous donation made by a resident of the Red Hook Houses, Ms. Joan
Bennett Stewart. The scholarship fund was created to give young adults
from Red Hook the opportunity to receive a scholarship that could help
ease the financial burdens that are associated with obtaining a college
degree. It is our hope that the scholarship will be a source of pride
and motivation for young people who are an important part of the fabric
of the Red Hook community.
Who is Eligible?
Recipients must meet the following requirements:
· Be a full-time resident of the Red Hook Houses.
(Students
who were residents of the Red Hook Houses for over five years and
recently moved out of the neighborhood will still be eligible.)
· Be enrolled at an accredited degree granting college and be working toward a 2 year or 4 year degree.
· For returning students, have cumulative GPA of at least 2.0.
· Have some demonstrated connection to the Red Hook community, beyond just living in the neighborhood.
How do I apply?

apply for the Joan Bennett Stewart Scholarship, please complete the
following and turn in to the Red Hook Initiative no later than Friday, July 31, 2009 at 5:00pm.
1) Complete “Application Packet.”
2) For first time students, a college acceptance letter and bill.
3) For returning students, a copy of transcript or grades from the last semester and a bill for the upcoming semester.
4) Letter of recommendation from one person (not a family member) who can attest to your interest in pursuing a college degree.
