Intercultural Work "Intercultural empathy, viewed as a human capacity that can be cultivated, might provide the seeds for positive social change in the context of racial/ethnic discrimination, unequal access to resources, and assymetrical power relationships that result in inequality and unfairness." (Brantmeier, p 70) Excerpt from Transforming Education for Peace ******************************************************************************************************************** Fulbright Program The Fulbright Program was established to promote mutual understanding and international friendship among people, insitutions, and nations. I have been awarded a Fulbright-Nehru Lecturing Award Grant in Peace Studies. I will be traveling to Varanasi, India to collaborate with colleagues at the Malaviya Centre for Peace Research and guest lecture at Benaras Hindu University. ******************************************************************* Curriculum Development in India The Globe Foundation created an internship in 2004 that allowed graduate students in the field of education to travel to Bangalore, India to participate in a unique partnership with the Globe Foundation and Christel House India Learning Center. Cross-Cultural Immersion
Experiential learning in the context of the "other" provides "self" insight and promotes multicultural competence. Cultural Immersion Projects at Indiana University is a model for doing guided, reflective, cross-cultural immersion experiences. I completed my student teaching in the Navajo Nation through this project in 1997. Later, from 2000-2003, I served as an Associate Instructor, guiding other students through cultural immersion experiences in the Navajo Nation as well as thirteen countries around the world.
