The etch lines usually go on the inside, where there can't be seen.
I know this sounds like common sense, but I didn't put it together until Chris pointed out I'd bent my step well sides backwards! Luckily I was able to fix the step well, but I won't make that mistake again! (I hope)

I did this the first time I assembled a set of step wells too :-)
