History

Members of ATOM, Qld have been involved in every major development in media education in Queensland. These include the several versions of the Senior Film and Television syllabus, the publication of Education Queensland's Media Curriculum Guide in 1994 and the development of the Queensland Studies Authority's Media strand of the Years 1 to 10 Arts Syllabus.

ATOM Qld Inc is an organisation with a rich and long history. Film and media teachers in Queensland were represented in a formal manner by the Queensland Council for Children's Film and Television from at least the mid 1960s. In 1977 a Brisbane branch of the Australian Society for Education in Film and Television was first established, providing support and information to teachers of Film Appreciation and Production. By 1981, this group had become the Queensland Media Teachers Association and its main aim was to support teachers introducing the new Senior Film and Television syllabus.

In 1982, the QMTA became a chapter of Australian Teachers of Media. ATOM Qld has played a key role in the development of media education in Queensland and Australia. The "Oz Media '88", "Media World '96" and "e-Merging Realities" (2006) conferences held in Brisbane were important events for the development of Australian media education.

ATOM Qld has hosted a number of internationally respected media educators, including David Lusted of the British Film Institute; U.K. theorist Len Masterman, Western Australia's Robyn Quin and Barry McMahon, David Buckingham from London University, Julian Sefton-Green from London's Weekend Arts College, Barry Duncan from the Association for Media Literacy in Canada, Kathleen Tyner from the University of Texas and Mizuko Ito from the University of Southern California just to name a few.

Media Education in Queensland

Queensland has a proud history of providing media education to students, particularly in secondary school. The first Film and Television syllabus was published and used in schools in 1981. This was the culmination of many years of hard work by film and media education enthusiasts.

In 2007, several Queensland Studies Authority documents support media education in Queensland.
