Scientific Research As you can see in the picture, peacock feathers have beautiful blues, greens and golds in them. The phenomena that makes this happen is called interference. Each feather is made out of really tiny flat branches. When the light bounces of the feather it kind of glows and we see thousands of glimmering colored spots, each caused by tiny bowl-shaped indentations. Interference also occurs with animals such as: butterflies, pheasants, birds of paradise, and humming birds. Relevance The reason this is relevant to what we've been studying in science is that it shows one of the characteristics of life. When a male peacock displays it's feathers, it is trying to court the female. This helps with reproduction. |
