4th Form ICT: lesson 3

Lessons 3–4  The internet

The aims of these lessons are:

  1. to introduce you to the idea of the Victorian internet;
  2. to introduce issues surrounding the handling of information and communication in modern societies;
  3. to explore the origins of the internet in pairs, using collaborative tools of your choice.

1 and 2: For last week's prep, you'll have been asked to look at Information Age: People, Information & Technology and to have found out more about 'The Atlantic cable'. In lesson 3, you'll find out a little more about the way the Victorians used technology to aid communication and the manipulation of information. Your teacher may start by looking at Porthcurno - The Victorian Internet with you. Why we start with the Victorian internet is explained here.

3: You'll then be asked to work in pairs. Using Internet Pioneers as a starting point, each pair will research material on two pioneers. Each pair will give a short presentation next lesson on their pioneers.

Prep for lesson 3: research your given internet pioneers. Collaboration in prep time will be important. Prepare a 5 minute talk on the pioneers and decide how to divide up the talk within each pair.
