Web 2.0 for fun

What is this Web 2.0 stuff?
Another name for it is "social software".

The basic concept is that people of all walks of life, ages, cultures, economic backgrounds, countries, and computer expertise are creating content on the web.

People are
- putting pictures online in shared communities (Flickr)
- linking to good books your friends are reading (GoodReads)
- working with many simultaneous writers in Word style documents (Google documents)
- creating wikis (Zoho wiki) to share information and store it in a central place
- storing Internet bookmarks online and sharing them with others (del.icio.us)
- and more!

Here's a very visual online video that explains the Web 2.0 Concept

Google Docs
- Create documents (think Microsoft Word), spreadsheets (similar to Excell), and presentations that are written and saved online in a secure account.  This is called "cloud computing".
- Invite other people to collaborate on them.  People can be writing in the SAME FILE at the SAME TIME!
- Access your docs from any computer with online access.
- It's completley FREE of charge. Take a tour to learn more!
- Just want to get started?  Go right to Google Docs.  You'll need to set up a Google account to get going.
- Here's a very well done short video from CommonCraft explaining the concept of Google Docs.

How have I used it?
- capture ideas I want to use from any computer
For example, I started the notes for this class on my home computer!
- stuff I want to work on with multiple people
* Writing interview questions with 4 other librarians
* An acronym list for the Pierce College Self Study document.  I needed to pose questions and get answers from 3 other people at Pierce... during July 4th holiday.
* I ordered textbooks for my class in Winter quarter.  Distance Learning now has a Google doc form that you fill in.
* Car shopping ideas and info.  My partner, Dave, and I can see what each other has found and keep all out notes in one place... with links to car reviews.
- suggested it to student for group projects

Wikis
- websites that can be created and edited quickly and easily by groups of people.
- from a Hawaiian word that means fast or quickly
- wikipedia is the most famous example of a wiki
- wikis permissions can be set up in a variety of ways.  From
    - completely unrestricted
= anyone can change them to change them... to
    - completely restricted = only invited people can make changes.
- many companies offer free wiki space... they will place text advertisements on the side of each page.  Low cost, advertising free subscriptions can be purchased.
- here's another short, entertaining  CommonCraft video.  This one explains wikis.

How Have I Used Wikis?
- the library uses wikis to help us
- create subject guides like this one!!!  You are using a wiki right now.
- decide
what materials to buy.  We can pull all the info about the items on a wiki and everyone can enter their votes
.
- store and communicate general information for library faculty and staff - reference desk schedule, meeting dates and minutes, home phone numbers, etc.
- central place to store electronic files of signs, handouts, outcomes documents, etc.
- I have used it as an online classroom space for students in my CMPTR 107 course "Quality Results from the Web".  It had class documents, notes for the topics each day, links I used in class, etc.  One quarter, students posted their own content about their projects for the class.

Give One a Try!
1) Post a comment to this wiki page.  Scroll down and click the Post a Comment link.
2) Create your own demo wiki in Zoho Wiki
3) Edit the test wiki for this class.

Here are some well know wiki services:
- Zoho wiki
- Wikispaces
- PB wiki

Many other Web 2.0 Technologies!

Social Bookmarking
- save your Internet Bookmarks or favorites in a web based free service. Access them from any computer.
- you can share them with other people who have similar interests.
- Here's a video with more details

Two well know Social Bookmarking Sites
- Delicious
- Connotea
- the library used this service for our Suggested Websites

Photos and Video

Flickr
- one of many photo storage and sharing services
- the library uses it to store photos of events, snapshots in time during the remodel, photos of other libraries for design ideas.

YouTube
- the infamous YouTube!  Yes, there's video of people's cats playing the piano... but there's good stuff, too!  Here's a video about scholarly vs popular periodicals.

TeacherTube
- a version of YouTube for teacher's videos.  Ever seen a 4th grade teacher singing rap about math?  Here's your chance!
