What is a Scholarly Journal Article?
Essentially, serious periodicals (journals and magazines) written by the researchers who performed the study or other experts in the field.  These are meant for professionals, students, or others who study that field.  These ARE NOT geared for the general public!!!

Look for:
- very technical, specialized vocabulary = jargon
- articles about very focused topics
- authors who work with research universities or research centers
- charts, statistics and data showing the results of a study
- a long list or references (sources) to other articles
- section heading such as MATERIALS, METHODS, RESULTS, DATA

Here's an Example of a Scholarly Journal

Kidd, E.A. & Beighton, D. (1996) Prediction of secondary caries around tooth-colored restorations: a clinical and microbiological study. Journal of Dental Research 75, 1942-1946. Retrieved from http://jdr.iadrjournals.org/cgi/reprint/75/12/1942

Be careful - NOT everything in a journal is a research study.  They may also include:

- literature reviews. A writer searches all the research studies on a topic and summarizes what is know about it.
- essays.  An expert's knowledgeable thoughts about an issue or topic.
- news briefs. Short announcements of all kinds of news items.
