Here are some common trouble spots...
- Start at the library's articles and databases page. Please don't go directly to www.proquest.com or any of the other databases. The college pays a subscription fee for all these, so we need to use an authentication process like the screen you see above.
- Please don't use dashes or spaces in your ID number.
- Try the number pad on the right side of your keyboard. Sometimes this makes a difference!
- Do you have a hyphenated or long last name? Give us a call or email and we'll make sure it's recorded properly in our database.
- Are you currently registered as a student? If not, unfortunately you won't be able to access the databases.
- Are you using a computer on the military base? The military has firewalls in place for extra security. Try using a non-military computer if one is available. You are always welcome at the
- For help resolving other problems, please contact Laurie Shuster at the email and phone number in the image above or from the bottom of the library home page .
I can't find any articles. What can I do?
1) Use different words (search terms) in your search. Try substituting synonyms (children, adolescents, teens) or professional terms (carries instead of cavities). The database, or Google, looks only for the words typed in, not their meaning. These are two very different searches to the computer...
children and cavities and pop
adolescents and carries and soda
2) Try a different database. Each databases will carry journals that the other's don't have.
3) Ask your classmates for ideas about other search terms. Feel free to chat with, call or email a librarian as well.
I also need some books. Where should I look in the library?
-
Search the library catalog. At the library home page, click the Books & Videos link at the top left of the page.
-
Take a look in the Reference and Circulating sections of the library.
I'm a dental hygiene student at Peninsula College. How do I use Pierce College article databases or library books?
Article databases - Peninsula College dental hygiene students can access databases from Pierce and Peninsula Colleges. Be sure you have your Pierce College student ID number before accessing Pierce databases. These normally begin with 925. Contact the dental hygiene office if you need to locate your student number.
Library books or journals in printed form - You are welcome to use any of our books and journals. The Peninsula Library staff can order these via Interlibrary Loan. See the Peninsula Library web page for specifics.
I found a great article on Google, but I have to pay for it. What can I do?
The library may have it in one of our database or in our printed collection on campus. We have thousands of magazines and journals on all topics. If not, we can order from another library by Inter Library Loan (ILL). See the Finding the Full Article page for details about how to quickly search our list of magazines, newspapers and journals.
What is a scholarly journal article?
See the Scholarly Journals page for additional information about what these are and how to tell when you've found one. How do I cite my sources?
