The Social Studies Department
Mission Statement
The mission of the Bowie Highschool social studies program is driven by our county commitment to educating our children for responsible citizenship as members of the local, national, and world communities and based on national standards for teaching and learning in social studies and history. Inquiry is at the core of this curriculum as students are challenged to ask questions, investigate, analyze, and critique before they draw conclusions about. Students must connect knowledge, skills, and values as they engage in historical and social inquiry. They must be able to recognize and respect multiple perspectives and diverse experiences in order to be contributing members of society.
Extra-Curricular Programs
Within the Social Studies Department we offer many distinct programs for students to get involved. The Model U.N. and Global alliance are just a few of the many programs offered to the students. Our teachers offer tutoring regularly and schedule vary depending on the teacher.
The Model U.N. is an academic simulation of the United Nations that aims to educate participants about civics, effective communication, globalization and multilateral diplomacy. In standard Model UN, students take on roles as diplomats and participate in a simulated session of an intergovernmental organization (IGO). More recently, simulation of other deliberative bodies has fallen under the umbrella of "Model UN," even if they are completely unrelated to the United Nations or even international affairs. Participants research a country, take on roles as diplomats, investigate international issues, debate, deliberate, consult, and then develop solutions to world problems. Teachers are encouraged to help students prepare for convention issues in advance by suggesting appropriate outside information. By participating in these activities, each member walks away with a more informed viewpoint on current issues.
Global Alliance The Global Anti-Destruction Alliance is a student program that focuses on awareness. Students meet afterschool and create ideas that are socially and morally conscience that the entire school body can take part in. Wether recycling reform or solar panals, the Global Anti-Destruction Alliance has plan for prolonging the life of planet earth.
