The students will continue developing the language skills
of listening, speaking, reading and writing in a gradual and logical
progression. The classes will be taught
in Spanish. However, some instructions will be given in English. When
appropriate, Spanish will be integrated into the classrooms to enable students
to make a connection with their learning. Materials include flash cards,
charts, SmartBoard, poems, songs and rhythms, and a variety of activities using
TPR (Total Physical Response), so that the students will acquire the language
quickly. Conversation will also be stressed in the classroom. A sampling of the
topics covered include: greetings, feelings, alphabet, culture, classroom
objects, family, shapes, time, food, colors, animals, clothes, numbers, days of
the week, months of the year, seasons, and weather.
Language
skills: Kindergarten,
First and Second Grades
The students at
these grade levels will do a variety of activities to practice the vocabulary
studied in class (visual aids, games, songs and TPR). Writing will not be
stressed in kindergarten. The students will be able to follow directions for
activities such as drawing, coloring, tracing a letter, a word, a picture, a
number or just performing any activity in the class to help them enhance the
knowledge they have of the target language. It is important to point out that
the vocabulary given will have the words written down so the students start to
get familiar with the language. The acquisition of the language will come more
easily when the student listens and follows the teacher’s instructions for each
activity. Also, the students will have the opportunity to be the leaders in a
class and give directions to their classmates when they are doing an activity.
This will motivate them to get more involved in class and to have more
self-confidence when they speak the target language.
First and second
grade students will write the main vocabulary of topics we learn in class. This
will be kept in their binders. This procedure will be a great help while they
are doing an assignment in class. The students will also need to understand the
word when they listen to it but also recognize it when they read it. This is
why it is important for students to practice the vocabulary already studied in
class over and over through different written activities.
Third,
Fourth and Fifth Grades
Listening: It is important at this age to listen to the
target language. Interactive songs, where lyrics are connected to visuals, will
be used as one type of activity to enhance learning and make learning fun.
Speaking: Throughout the repetition of the vocabulary that the
students learn in the class, they will create phrases and small sentences to
develop their speaking skills. These are
progressive learning steps, as the material presented will become more
challenging through the year. I will
continue correcting any oral or written mistakes the students make in order to
help them to correctly pronounce and write the vocabulary.
Reading: The students will continue learning the
vocabulary using visual aids (picture-words). I will use books from the library
to expand the use of vocabulary.
Writing: Students will write the main vocabulary of topics we learn
in class. This will be kept in their binders. This procedure will be a great
help while they are doing an assignment in class. The students will also need
to understand each word when they listen to it and also recognize it when they
read it. This is why it is important for students to practice the vocabulary
already studied in class over and over through different written activities.
