November News- November 3rd Coming Soon!- Math Basketball 09'
We are winding down our multiplication/decimal unit as we move into November. Students have learned how to compute both whole numbers and decimals using partial products, traditional and the lattice method. We have also dabbled in some work with probability. This is a subject that we will revisit again later this year. Students will end this unit on a fun note as we move into our math basketball project. Each rotation will be broken up into four teams and they will be competing daily by way of practicing times tables. Along the way we will learn how to design a spreadsheet, add formulas to the spreadsheet and graph the data from our basketball season. We wrap up our project with our annual contest against the sixth grade that will be held sometime in early December. Students will also begin doing work on their math portfolios in mid-November. They will be required to choose 3-4 pieces of work from their math storage folders and write a brief synopsis of what they learned from the topic. There will be more information about this prior to beginning the assignment.
October News- October 5, 2009
In math class we have settled into our daily routines. Once a week, students enthusiastically work on an activity called math mysteries. We have also begun working with Mr. K. every Wednesday for our problem-solving class. We are winding down our review of Number theory through a variety of activities such as solving factor trees, and multiplication mazes. We have also learned how to use exponents and find the square root of a number using a calculator and a method called the “squeeze method.” Students will have their first math test on October 8th. They received a study guide last week that they can use to begin preparing for the test. Our next unit will be on estimation and computation. As students complete their assignments each week they receive them back and store them in their math portfolios in the classroom. Next up is our unit on estimation and computation. We will be walking to Hawk Mountain for this unit. Well sort of as you'll see soon! Want to brush up on some basic skills?
