Language Arts November Notes

We will soon put together three class poetry anthologies and a poetry voice thread of the fifth graders' original poems. From the quality of the poetry the students are writing, I can already see that these collections will be spectacular. The fifth graders have really shown their talent as poets, writing a wonderful assortment of poems ranging from silly and playful to powerful, serious, and touching poetry. In early October when we began our poetry unit, the students put together a voice thread about poems they love. On the Voice Thread, you can hear the fifth graders read their favorite poems and discuss why the poems "speak to them." Voice Thread also allows students (and you) to comment on students' poems. You can ask your child to show our Voice Thread to you, or check it out at the following addresses:

During November, we will officially begin playwriting. Towards the end of the month, students will learn about important aspects of plays, including characters, conflict, obstacles, settings, and stage directions.

To help students learn about plays, the fifth graders will be reading a number of plays in class, and they will attend a play at the Arden Theater in January. It would also be great if you could help them attend Philadelphia Young Playwrights’ winners' performances. In fact, the PYP performances begin this Saturday. Henry Centeno and Isiah Powell-Taylor's plays will be performed at the Art Alliance (251 S. 18th St.) on Saturday at 11 A.M. I hope to see you there!
