September Newsletter and Looking Ahead

We’ve enjoyed the first days of second grade and hope that your children are becoming used to the new routines and adventures of their new class.

Please give a special welcome to our new student, Nick Case, and do everything possible to make Nick and his family a part of our second grade community.

Thank you to our 3 class chairs, Rachel Shipon, Caroline Shuman,  and Jodi Jaspan,  who we can tell will be indispensible. They have already created a family email list and will send home notes on a regular basis. We will also use that list if we need to share last minute information. Please let us know if you have not yet received their email or you wish to add another email address.

Thinking and Learning About Communities

Second grade is thrilled that Penn Charter, from pre-K through 12th, will also be studying community this year. We’re planning some special Fall events – a trip to Weaver’s Way Farm, a day in Chestnut and we’ll share specifics as these events are confirmed. We're also planning Service Projects both at PC and in East Falls, our neighboring community. We'll share these ideas with you as they develop. We’ll be creating a community of our own…… using small boxes (pill, soap, toothpaste sized). Please help us collect as many small boxes as possible so your children can be creative. There will be a large collection box for our little boxes below our showcase. Thanks for your support.

Important Reminders

Dismissal: Please remember that if there are changes in your child's dismissal plans, we must have permission from you (each classroom has plenty of notepaper in case you forget to write the note before leaving home). You can also call Kathy Feidler in the LS office (please call as early in the day as possible as 2:45 is a hectic time in Lower School).

Allergies: As you already know, we have quite a few children with nut allergies in second grade. Please be vigilant when you send in snacks, and make sure that all food is nut free. Our goal is to create a safe environment for each second grader.

Snacks: please send in a healthy snack for your child to eat just before morning specials – no candy, cookies or chips, etc (how about fruit, crackers, carrot sticks, granola…….)

Change of Clothes: Please send in a complete, labeled change of clothes. These should stay in your child’s cubby. Lost clothing and many tears can be avoided simply by writing your child’s name in permanent marker.

Homework: We will share some preliminary information about homework in second grade at Back to School Night. More specifics will be sent home with your child in the near future when our Just Right Books homework program begins.

Questions or concerns: If you have any immediate questions or concerns, please get in touch. It is important to us that we have open lines of communication. You can send in a note or e-mail us:

djennings@penncharter.com
jmorrow@penncharter.com

In an emergency, you can call the office and leave a message with Kathy Feidler. Although we each have voice mail, it is difficult for us to access that system. Thanks!

Specials: The first day of school we sent home a copy of Penns and Charters Specials for the second grade year. Please post this at home so that you can help your child be prepared each day. When your child has P.E., sneakers are needed. When your child has Art, a smock (adult sized tee shirt) is needed. Smocks (and extra sneakers if you have them) should stay at school.
