Help Wanted

We will continue to post new positions as time goes on.  Volunteer here now!

Film Room

15 May 2008, 4:32PM PDT by communications (Matt Arnold)

We need someone to put together a collection of films, preferably films released under Creative Commons licenses, put together a schedule to give to the program, and play the movies during the weekend according to the schedule. We can provide at-the-door volunteers to watch over the film room and change DVDs.

Webcomic Track Head

11 May 2008, 8:38PM PDT by communications (Matt Arnold)  [updated at 8:40PM PDT]

The go-to person for definitive answers about what is happening in the webcomic track. Must have (or form a team of those who together have):
  • broad knowledge of webcomics.
  • ideas for panel topics or events in the webcomics track.
  • connections in the webcomics community.

Brazilian Beef Cookout

11 May 2008, 7:39PM PDT by communications (Matt Arnold)  [updated at 8:39PM PDT]

Chuck Child will hand off info to you about how to make sure everything happens that needs to happen in order to have a successful cookout. Learn how to cook steak the traditional Brazilian way, and he'll give you some practice at a SMOS dinner. Rent a trailer grill, and buy beef, rock salt, paper plates and plastic ware with Penguicon's funds. Set the price and manage the payments.

Charity Auction

10 May 2008, 6:08AM PDT by communications (Matt Arnold)  [updated at 6:24AM PDT]

This is not an auctioneering position, as we already have found qualified and available auctioneers. But we will not have an auction unless we find someone to create it. Before the convention, the Charity Auction person finds sufficient sale items, appraises them, and photographs them. Administers a system to track the winners and winning prices during the auction, and exchanges claim slips and money for the items after the auction.

Photographer

5 May 2008, 9:39AM PDT by communications (Matt Arnold)  [updated at 10:28AM PDT]

This person would take photos at Penguicon and give them to us in a web-ready form. Preferably, the same person would put them online in a Flickr gallery that we can embed on our site.

Call For Papers

5 May 2008, 9:24AM PDT by communications (Matt Arnold)  [updated at 10:28AM PDT]

We need somebody who knows how to do a call for papers to be presented at Penguicon. This person would
- know where to send this (Linux Weekly News, schools, etc.)
- decide the deadlines for proposals and final papers
- publicize the announcement where it's likely to get responses
- receive the papers@penguicon.org address to track the responses in coordination with the Head of Tech Programming, Trevor Jagoda.

Here is a Call For Papers announcement that Rob Landley once wrote, revised to fit next year.
This is a call for papers for the open source software track of Penguicon 7.0, the weekend of May 1 through 3 in Romulus, Michigan (website http://www.penguicon.org).

Proposals (1000 words or less) describing the paper topic are due by { decide a date }, and should be emailed to papers@penguicon.org.  All proposals will be replied to, so use a working return email address. Final papers are due by { decide a date }. Papers should be 6 to 15 pages (very roughly 2500 to 8000 words, minus graphics and charts as appropriate). We accept papers in any format that can be converted to both HTML and PDF (although we may require you to do the conversion).

Accepted papers will result in an offer to present at Penguicon (including a free one-day admission or corresponding discount on a full weekend admission). Presentation slots are 1 hour. Video projectors capable of accepting 1024x768 vga video available upon request. Accepted papers, and audio recordings of Penguicon presentations, may be made available on the Penguicon website.

Penguicon is a combination Linux expo and science fiction convention featuring a diverse assortment of guests and topics. Our annual "Hack Of Honor" features inventions such as the Musical Tesla Coils, and Candyfab, a 3-D printer that creates sculptures from sugar. In previous years our technical guests have included Eric Raymond, Jon "Maddog" Hall, Nat Torkington, Chris DiBona, Christine Petersen, Bruce Schnier, Jono Bacon, and Benjamin Mako Hill. Our fannish guests have included Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, Steve Jackson, Charlie Stross, and Vernor Vinge. For 2009, our invited guests include Wil Wheaton and Spider Robinson.

Recording Archivist

5 May 2008, 9:09AM PDT by communications (Matt Arnold)  [updated at 10:29AM PDT]

This person is in charge of making sure events at Penguicon are recorded as audio, and getting that onto the internet. We would also like video where realistically possible, but that's not essential.

We own eight or nine digital voice recorders, but they have no data output, so in order to extract their contents they must play back in realtime through a cable to the computer that re-records it. We would like very much to find a better solution, and a Recording Archivist could help us do this.

Recording at Penguicon 2009  will work on an Opt-Out system. In the arrival packet every Program Participant receives as they check in, Program Ops will include a recording notification letting them know that they need to tell us if they wish to not be recorded. After Penguicon, the Scheduling Wrangler will send a mass email to the Program Participants announcing that Penguicon audio is going on the web and asking them to let us know if they would like us to not include their talk.

The Penguicon website FAQ page has this to say:

Q: Am I going to appear on the internet in photos, videos, or voice recordings of Penguicon?

A:

If you leave your house and someone records you, by default assume somebody will put it on the internet. If you ask the convention organizers to withhold any such recordings from Penguicon's own communications channels, we're cooperative about honoring such requests. Hey, we're all friends here. Send your request with this form after the convention and specify what recording you were on with whatever details you can.

Of course we can't speak for your fellow attendees, many of whom will be carrying photography and recording equipment, and some of whom might have it implanted in their retinas. If there is a problem with that, we sympathize. May we suggest sunglasses, a scarf and a stylish wide-brimmed hat? Just say your convention costume is Carmen Sandiego.
