Questions & Answers

You have added a Creative Commons Terms and Conditions control. Who has responsibility for the site?

Ideally, it would be "the project team". I assumed that since that is not a legal entity, the most straightforward solution would be to list all the team members as license holders. We haven't yet had a detailed discussion on terms and conditions, so I wrote down what was my interpretation of the consensus from our last meeting. The purpose of my mail was to propose this for discussion and acknowledgement / correction before exposing the site. The intent behind the form I used was to allow people out of the project to make a contribution, and to respect those contributions, without impairing our options to derive publications from our work.

Is the site offering a service and should there be both terms and conditions for those who add to the site and also right to use conditions for users wishing to benefit from the site?

It is not a service in the sense of guaranteed response, but it is a platform for open discussion. I tried to cover that in the terms, while keeping them short and simple.

Are you writing the entries on email etc yourself? If so why not use existing information and acknowledge its source? Why not reference other relevant sites for the various entries?

Yes, we are writing the entries. No point in quoting / repeating information in other places. A link to wikipedia is usually all that is needed in terms of general reference. The focus here is on a practical "field guide", answering the "how" more than "what" or "why". We haven't seen enough existing resources with that perspective. Most people either know how to use the tools, and don't see it as an issue, or don't know and don't know where to start.

I like the approach using the 'so you want to do.....' Are you seeking to build these into patterns or exemplars??

In the long run, yes. But not here. I'm hoping this would be a good conversation starter for pattern elicitation. Patterns will need much richer structure, evidence and detail. Its a start, but it won't go too far. This thing, if it works, will probably develop a life of its own, with cross-references to patterns.

Are the tips you offer intended as technical tips i.e. to use a blog as a group portal you need to create the site, add pages etc. or raising awareness information i.e. did you know you can use a blog as a group portal?

We're assuming there are enough technical references out there, and we can link to them. Alternatively, "blog as mini portal" could be a pattern. The idea here is to raise awareness to possibilities and issues, on the social / cultural / practical (in the sense of "practice") side.

What is the anticipated lifetime of the site? Are there plans for supporting it after the completion of the project?

Depends on the public response. If we have hit on a genuine need, we'll find funding to support this longer. That would be either through JISC (e.g. benefit realization) or other public / commercial channels. If we're off the mark, no point in sending good money after bad.
