October 12, 2008 Rev. Charlie Swartz This text is the "golden calf" incident. I am sure that they knew it was wrong to make and worship a metal animal, but they just couldn't help themselves. Isn't that true! We each have these idols that we don't want to take the center stage in our life. And yet they so often do! Here are some golden calves to consider: technology, finances, health. What are on your list?
October 19, 2008 Pastor Charlie Swartz "Show Me Your Glory" More lessons from the epic journey of Moses and the Israelites. Moses finds it hard to lead the people. He realizes that if he does not have God's assurance of his presence, then he cannot do it. This is a good position for us to be in. It is too easy for me to think a great challenge is attacked through planning, coordinating, and personal effort. Yes, those things are very important. But the most important is asking God if He is going to be involved. How does God reply to Moses? To us?
October 26, 2008 "Re-Formation" Pastor Vonna Thomas This week was Reformation Sunday. We Presbyterians have a motto: "The Church reformed, always reforming". You can even find it in our Book of Order, G-2.0200. The book of Deuteronomy itself is a Book of Order or a Book of Law, the name Deuteronomy meaning "the second Law". We also are using a famous passage from Matthew in which Jesus answers the test question, "Which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" You know the answer...Jesus talks about loving the Lord our God whole-heartedly and our neighbor as ourselves. When you think about "LAW", what do you think of? What do you feel?
