Birmingham Christmas Shelter (formerly Birmingham Open Christmas) has been operating for over 30 years and was set up as a registered charity in June 1991.
Throughout this time, we have strived to provide warmth, shelter, food and company to the homeless and lonely of Birmingham during the Christmas period. We provide an essential service during a time when many other services are closed. We also depend entirely on donations and volunteers. All of our volunteers are unpaid and give up their free time.
This year we were open from 23rd - 28th December and each day we welcomed between 75 and 150 guests. On Christmas Day we fed 145 guests at lunch and 103 slept over at the shelter. We provided haircuts, chiropody, dental treatment, clothing and a safe and warm place to sleep.
The Trustees would like to extend a huge thank you to all our volunteers and area supervisors. Without your help, advice, commitment and resourcefulness, the Shelter simply would not work.
Videos of our Christmas Shelter for 2008 are on-line at our Birmingham Christmas Shelter YouTube channel. You can also see some photos from Christmas on our Birmingham Christmas Shelter Flickr site.
We have also received a thank you note from one of our guests.
