Projects

1st Qtr
1} Draw a map sketching out a typical village (colony), showing common lands, settlement structure, fortifications, etc.
 
2} Choose two of the following:
Daniel Shays   James Madison   Patrick Henry   John Jay   George Washington   Alexander Hamilton   John Adams   Aaron Burr
Include in their biography the following:
   History. This should be a description of the Founding Fathers heritage, where they came from, where they settled, education and occupation
   Characteristics. What kind of individual was the Founding Father, what kind of family, what made them a successful leader, what role did the Christian faith play in their leadership
   Contribution. What contributions did the Founding Father make in our achieving independence and establishing of a new government. Also discuss at what personal expense were these
       contributions made.
   Also include 2 quotes for each at least one picture pertaining to each
Conclude the paper with a discussion as to why or why not this Founding Father would be a good leader for today’s society.
 
 3} War for Independence Dairy – Assume the role of a citizen, a solider, nurse, newspaper person, etc… Record what might have been taking place during a seven day period, our record can about days before, during and after a war battle. Include at least one hand drawn map of the battle. Decorate the outside appropriately.

4} Drawing Political Cartoons – for Boston Massacre, Boston Tea Party, Stamp Tax, ratification of the Constitution, War of 1812, etc…Cartoons should be from both viewpoints.

5} Create a chart – Showing the following:
Founder and date
Chief Crop
Results
Slavery
Government style
Legislature
Type of colony
Religion
For each of the 13 colonies.

2nd Qtr

Project 1 -  Create a chart comparing the French Revolution (1789) and the American War for Independence, include the following in your chart:
   a) governmental systems before
   b) casues which led up to
   c) effects of
   d) length of
   e) governmental systems after
   f) the role of religion
   g) trace development since in each country
   h) conclsuion - form an opinion aas to the overall success or failure of each
Decorate your poster in any way that will contribute to the overall message of your comparison
 
Project 2 - Create a "Shadow Box of some major battle of the War for Independence

Project 3 - Create a picture depicting the "Boston Massacre, include also a written description

Project 4 - Drawing Political Cartoons – for Boston Massacre, Boston Tea Party, Stamp Tax, ratification of the Constitution, War of 1812, etc…Cartoons should be from both viewpoints.

Project 1 - Create a Poster – Spanish American War
Include the following:
   a) Causes for the war
   b) Attempts made to resolve
   c) Major Battles & outcomes
   d) Final Results
Project 2 - Create a set of 54 Playing Cards
   a) Create 4 suits or use the standard 4 suits
   b) Each suit must represent 1 of the major battles of the Civil War
   c) Aces through Jacks (Knaves) must be Commanders
   d) Numbered cards must can represent Junior Officers, causalities, weapons, etc....
   e) You must also include 2 Jokers, they can represent some unknown element or something
       unexpected, Southern names for a battle, etc...
Project 3 - Report, choose two (2), 3-4 pages on one of the following topics:
   a) The rise and impact of the Ku Klux Klan
   b) The Differences in the Lincoln and Johnson plans for Reconstruction
   c) Corruption of the Post-Civil War Government
   d) The Contributions of Chinese Immigrants from 1860's to 1890's
Project 4 – Create a newspaper (1) page poster:
Include as your main story the sinking of the U.S.S. Maine, why was it important, where did it take place, etc…
Describe also “yellow journalism”
Explain why Spain & America went to war
How did America win the war
What were the results of the war

4th Qtr

Project 1 - Create two recruitment posters for World War 1, you can choose an American, British or German perspective
 
Project 2 - Do a 4 to 5 page report on one of the following
   1)The Social Change brought on by the youth in the following areas of the 1920's:
      a) the effects on music and its effects
      b) the effects on fashions
      c) the effects on politics

   2) Discuss how the following books portray the depression era: "The Grapes of Wrath," "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "Of Mice and Men."
   3) Do a photo essay of one of the following World War II battles; Normandy Invasion, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, German Blitzkrieg into Poland, El Alamein, Midway Island. Each page must contain 3 to 4 photos with some explanation of what is happening. The essay should be 4 to 5 pages in length.
 
Project 3 - Creat a poster, chart showing world involvement in World War II. Listing casualties, financial costs, civilian impact, atrocities.
Project 4 - You will read one of the following Supreme Court Cases Decisions and do a 4 to 5 page report on it. You will include in your report the following information:
   a) historical backgorund,   b) circumstances of the case,   c) identify the Constitutional issues,   d) the case decision and rationale,   e) how this decision affects us today, and f) a conclusion - your agreement or disagreement with the decision, your views on how this will affect us in the future and overall opinion of the case.
Chose one of the following three:
   Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey vs. United States (221 U.S. 1 {1910}) - dissolving interstate monopolies
   Schenck vs. United States (249 U.S. 47 {1919}) - freedom of speech, "clear and present danger" - shouting fire in a movie theater
   Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. vs. Sawyer (343 {1952}) - presidential power to seize steel mills during strike to ensure wartime production
 
MISC. Other Projects
 
 1) Presidential Briefing
   Directions: You are a member of EX-COMM, the Executive Committee of the U.S. National Security Council which includes members of the upper levels of the intelligence community. Your task is to advise President Kennedy about an appropriate and effective U.S. response to the apparent Soviet missle installations in Cuba. President Kennedy will address the nation on Monday 22 October 1962, revealing the existence of the Soviet missle capacity in Cuba and detailing the U.S. repsonse.
   Your Duty: Prepare a policy briefing containing your recommendations for the U.S. reaction to the U2's (a spy plane) news. A policy brieifng contains background information to support a particular position which you will recommend to the President.
   Particulars:
   a) Research the crisis - the following websites will help:
   b) Things you need to keep in mind:
      1) is the placement of Soviet nuclear missles in Cuba a "real" threat to U.S. security?
      2) damage that a singular nuclear missle can cause
      3) the wording of your brief must be done carefully not inflammatory language
      4) your brief is of little value if not supported by facts
   c) Some opitions you may want to consider, there are others as well:
      1) ignore the missles they are not really a threat
      2) negotiate a settlement
      3) bomb the missle sites and other military sites
      4) invade Cuba taking out Castro and replacing him with a more friendly leader and destroy the missle sites
      5) bomb missile sites in the Soviet Union as a portest
   d) Anser the follwoing as well
      1) damgae control
      2) communication of the U.S. position to our allies
      3) dealing with the rest of the world
      4) dealing with Nikita Khrushchev and the Soviet Union
      5) our response to the evidence of Soviet missiles in Cuba
      6) rate the crisis in terms of severity, 1 to 10, 10 being the most severe
      7) create a "Need to Know" page
   e) Your Paper will not longer than 4 typed pages using a 10 or 12 size font 
Power Point Projects:
   1} The Roaring Twenties
      Create a Power Point Presentation that includes at least the following:
      a) movies and movie stars - min. 2 slides
      b) music and dance crazes, Radio shows - min. 2 slides
      c) sports heroes - min. 1 slide
      d) cars and vacation - min. 1 slide
      e) The Florida Land Boom - min. 2 slides
      f) The Teapot Dome Scandal - min. 2 slides
      g) clothing styles and flappers - min. 1 slide
   Be sure to include some song lyrics, pictures and movie shots
 
   2} World War II
   Create a Power Point Presentation around one of the following topics: The Blitzkrieg, D-Day Invasion
   The Manhattan Project (include Hiroshima and Nagasaki), Pearl Harbor Attack or The Battle of Iwo Jima
   Include the Following:
      a) Introduction Slide
      b) What happen before the event
      c) Who was involved, what happend, why did it happen, etc...
      d) Waht was the aftermath, in other words the effects
      e) a conclusion, wrapping it up, summarizing
   Be sure to include pictures, quotes, diagrams that are appropriate. This presentation must be at least 9 slides
   in length.
