After the glorious nail biting finish to last year’s fiercely contested Grand Final against Old Xaverians, many could be forgiven for thinking that Old Scotch may be inclined to put its feet up and rest comfortably with two successive premierships squared safely away in the cabinet. However, as the season comes upon us for 2009/10, the revived Old Scotch juggernaut powers on, welcoming back familiar faces, whilst introducing some new ones as well to the mix. For Season 2009/10, the MCC competition continues to thrive with the inclusion of two new teams, Old Geelong Grammarians and Old Melburnians 2nd XI. In addition, the finals series has been expanded to include 6 teams this year which all bodes well for an extremely spirited and healthy competition.
As in the past 2 years, Old Scotch will enter two teams into the competition, the 1st XI reigning premiers once again led by the tenacious Rob Ashton, whilst the 2nd XI will still be striving for a finals berth under the wise and determined James ‘Plugger’ Simon. A new ICC approved playing kit has been greenlit for season 09/10, with the aim to give Old Scotch that extra edge over its rivals aesthetically, mentally and most importantly physically. Furthermore, with the resurfacing of the Meares Oval this summer, no less than 6 games are scheduled to be played in the serene surrounds of the Scotch College Main Oval, including the eagerly anticipated OLD SCOTCH DERBY! on Saturday 12th December. Major Sponsors Pulse Pharmacy, OSCA and the Bridge Hotel are back on board and committed to continue building the strength of the OSCC for season 09/10.
With the season opener only 2 weeks away on the 17th October, the inaugural Old Scotch Cricket Club v Old Scotch Football Club 20/20 Spectacular took place last week as a loosener for many of the boys . With the aid of some questionable umpiring, the Football club proved too strong for the cricketers, unearthing some potential talent that had the Old Scotch recruiting staff in a spin.
Furthermore, with several of the club’s seasoned players plying their trade in international waters this summer, the club has embarked on a fierce recruiting campaign and signed several youngsters who look set to take the competition by storm. First off the rank is Richie ‘who can, McCann can’, the plucky all-rounder with a viper quick wit and affable nature. He is sure to keep the opposition on their toes with his deft batting skills and is an early smokie for club champion. His partner in crime from Brisbane is Damien Stewart. Already showing in the nets that he has a watchful eye, Damo not only bats with a sublime touch, but is a candidate to fill the keeping position that has been on a rotation basis for the past 2 years. After the Ashes catastrophe earlier this year, Old Scotch has decided to enlist the help of ex-pat Pom Matt Dickinson. Dicko blends the sturdy failproof batting technique of Tom Whitelaw with the one-two side shuffle bowling action of Ben Doherty, creating a formidable force that is sure to help Old Scotch power towards the finals. Another man who has jumped on board after a 10 year exodus of the game is Will ‘MC’ Morton. A pillar of a man, MC is raring to go and fill the bowling workhorse hole that only a select and worthy few have been willing to fill over the past couple of years.
However, don’t be fooled, it is not a case of ‘out with the old, in with the new’, and you can expect to see many a familiar face pulling on the whites for Old Scotch this year. Names such as Orr, Griffiths, Thomas, Bennett, Simon, Ashton, Butler, Spargo, Haines, Lake, Crozier Durham and Wood will all be back and raring to go. Behind the scenes Rick ‘Cowboy’ Western has his secret cordial formula still tightly under lock and key holding out for Round 1, and there is no doubt Old Scotch legends Bill McNaughton and Manson Russell will drop in to support the boys when the season gets underway. The Old Scotch Cricket Club is gearing up for another season as it attempts a 'three-peat' of premierships. Captain Coach Rob Ashton is optimistic about the season ahead. "The club is looking forward to season 2009-10. We know that other sides will come at us hard but we feel we are well prepared for the challenges that lie ahead.' Spiritual leader James 'Plugger' Simon will again look after the second team. In a seamless transition, Nich Hildebrandt replaces Chris Wood as President. The club thanks Chris for getting it back on track and looks forward to working with Nich.
The Club is playing a practice match against the Old Scotch Football Club on Sunday 4 October at Scotch College on the Rugby Oval commencing at 1.00pm. Come along and watch what should be a very entertaining clash.
The club looks forward to playing against the new teams in the MCC competition this season - Old Geelong, Old Wesley and the second Old Melburnians team. Round one commences on 17 October with the second XI drawn to play Old Trinity at Fawkner Park and the first XI are drawn to play the MCC on Sunday 18 October, also at Fawkner Park.

With the footy season done and dusted it is now time to scrounge out your whites (Plugger is going for his 6th year in a row without washing them) and start rolling the arm over, because CRICKET SEASON 09/10 is soon to get underway.
In the meantime, as a warmup fixture, the first
OLD SCOTCH FOOTY CLUB V OLD SCOTCH CRICKET CLUB 20/20 SPECTACULAR SPECTACULAR! will take place THIS SUNDAY!
The fiercest of rivals, the revered history of this competition harks back many a week ago, when the FOOTBALL CLUB's TIM 'TK' KECK issued a fervent challenge to the CRICKET CLUB's ROB ASHTON. In his strongly worded letter, KECK expressed that, and I quote:
'the cricket club is the 'new kid on the block' already thinking it is far too big for it's boots. It's not like cricket is a hard game to play anyway, just throw the ball at the 3 sticks and if your batting throw some wood at a red ball and then run like 10 metres. Rob Ashton thinks the RUSH brothers know how to hit a ball, wait til he sees TK put him to all ends of the Rugby Oval.
Strong words there from Mr Keck. Rob Ashton made no comment in reply but just stood arrogantly with his TWO SUCCESSIVE premiership cups next to him goading the cocky young footballer. Obviously there will be no love lost come Sunday and we expect it to be a magnificent day. For 'more details', read below.

OLD SCOTCH LOCAL DERBY (aka "a day on the main") Saturday, 13th December On December 13 from 1pm at the College's Main Oval, the Scotchies (1stXI vs 2ndXI) will battle it out under a setting of marquees, music, food and drinks. After the disappointment of a washed out Derby last year, the anticipation of this highly anticipated showdown is reaching fever pitch. Even the most seasoned cricket lover is buzzing with an anticipation not seen since the spice girls came to Australia in January 1998, for a promotion-only tour that saw them venturing to Highpoint for a screening of their movie Spice World. Full details will be announced soon, but gourmet BBQ, beer, wine and champagne will be on offer, and relaxed but classy summer wear will be the theme of the day.
