He was also simultaneously a cheerful throwback to more innocent times, appreciating the remarkable simple pleasures that Saturday afternoon cricket offers, and always played the game with a free spirit that often saw him hook opening bowlers over the boundary ropes before even the pitch itself had decided upon its pace and bounce.
Deriving his nickname 'textbook' for his elegant technique throughout his indoor cricket career, the same could be said of his outdoor cricket. Employing a high elbow, a minimal of footwork, a still head and perfect balance he often made 4th day, uncovered, slow wickets resemble the first day of a Les Burdett, Adelaide Oval 'belta'.
