The National Writing Project is the largest professional development network in the country, and currently has 185 local sites, including the West Texas Writing Project in El Paso. NWP is a federally funded nonprofit, and is listed in the No Child Left Behind catalog of models for comprehensive school reform. True to the NWP professional development model, we value teacher experience as the key to school reform, and provide local, state, and national networks to support sustained teacher development. The West Texas Writing Project is sponsored by the Department of English, College of Liberal Arts, at the University of Texas at El Paso. Its site management team of university educators and classroom teachers reflects our belief in the synergy of research and classroom experience. WTWP is committed to improving literacy beyond the classroom through young writers' camps and literacy programs in the community, and to providing leadership opportunities and recognition for El Paso teachers.
