Impact

The National Writing Project (NWP) is represented in 184 sites across the country. Eleven of those are in Texas. Each site is located at a major university and serves teachers, students, administrators, parents, and community through a myriad of outreach activities. The main activity of each site, however, is the Summer Institute. Experienced and effective teachers are invited to spend four to five weeks

in the summer engaging in the NWP’s philosophy—teachers teaching teachers. Other activities include open institutes, young writers camps, professional development workshops, conferences, mentoring programs, and more. Our ten Texas NWP sites promote the principles of the national model: Teachers are the best teachers of other teachers, effective professional development requires a continuum of in-service programs, and students ultimately benefit from research-based practices. The sites serve K-12 schools across the state and have established partnerships with school districts, many of which are Title I eligible.

The National Writing project of Texas matches $3 for every federal $1. More than 200 Teacher Consultants provide approximately 3500 hours of professional development for Texas educators each year.
