PLAYOFFS:  WE RUN THIS!

The Northwood Varsity Girls came alive in the second half of the first round playoff game against South Hagerstown on Friday night.  The Gladiators were down by two goals after the first period of play but the second half told a different story.  With renewed determination and excellent team work Northwood dominated the field, slotted three goals and in doing so punched their ticket  to the next level of the play-offs!!  What a great start to Northwood's Homecoming weekend!  Game photos here.

2A West girls soccer: Clean slate

by Jennifer Beekman | Staff Writer

The Clarksburg girls soccer team's season hasn't gone exactly the way it hoped. For the first time in the program's three years of existence, the Coyotes (4-6) failed to eclipse the .500 mark.

But that disappointment can change with Thursday's start to the Class 2A West Region tournament, when the slate will be wiped clean and Clarksburg can start anew. The Coyotes have won their first-round matchups each of the last two years, and are looking to take it a step further in 2008.

To do so, they'll have to get through a strong bracket that includes county foes Northwood (3-7-1) and Rockville (2-7-2), as well as Washington County's North Hagerstown (7-1-1), Carroll County's Century (9-2-2) and Liberty (7-3-0) and Frederick County's Middletown (3-5-0).

The Coyotes have several scoring options to keep themselves in the running. They're led up top by three-year starter Daria Borowski (4 goals, 4 assists) and freshman Sunita Mengers (5). Lexi McCarty and Cassidy Pickles anchor a strong midfield that has powered their transition game.

Northwood failed to make it past the first round of last year's tournament, and has struggled with inconsistency in 2008. When on their game, the Gladiators possess the ball and attack using repeated passes.

They don't have one standout start capable of taking over a game. They're led up top by sophomore Carolyn Bruch, but have nine players who have scored at least one goal.

Last year's Montgomery 3A/2A/1A West Division champion, Rockville, has struggled to compensate for devastating graduation casualties. Stalwart goalie Julia Cosmos has done a good job keeping the Rams in games; she's averaging less than one goal allowed per game.

But Rockville has only scored 11 goals and been shut out six times. Seniors Michelle Carter and Jen Civick will have to step up their games in the final third for the Rams to go deep.

Clarksburg boys get past Northwood, into final

by Dan Greenberg | Staff Writer

With its 3-0 victory over arch-rival Northwood Thursday, the Clarksburg boys soccer team is right where it was a year ago: the Class 2A West Region final, where it will face reigning regional champion Liberty. But the Coyotes believe — and in their minds, know — this go-round will be different.

"This year, we're more prepared," said senior midfielder Dillon Muise, who tallied a goal and an assist in the victory. "Me and Peabo [Doue] went to see them a couple months ago and they looked good, but we're going to be ready. … I think about how any game can be our last game, but then I think about states, and it just overpowers everything else."

Muise and Doue, both team captains, have been the driving forces behind the Coyotes' (11-2-1) Montgomery 3A/2A/1A West Division championship and subsequent No. 1 seed in their postseason bracket. And once again, they showed why they are two of the county's premier players; in the first half, Muise absolutely hammered a free kick off the inside crossbar just inside the goal line, 25 yards from net.

Not to be outdone, Doue put the game out of reach in the 64th minute with a free-kick goal of his own, blasting a shot easily around the Northwood wall and rippling the net, upper tank. He added another insurance goal with 4 minutes remaining, running onto a goal kick sent by Muise and shielding off a slew of defenders before beating Northwood goalkeeper Eric Swarth.

For the season, Doue now has 17 goals. Muise, meanwhile, has 16 assists.

"They've been doing it all season," said Clarksburg coach Jeremy Spoales. "And with Northwood, they're an excellent team and they've had a great year. But I really think our team, you know, they've never scored on us, never beaten us. I think it's the only team in the entire county that I think they can compete with every time."

In 2009, the Gladiators (9-3-2) very well may be where the Coyotes currently are. The 3A/2A/1A East champs, their core is made up of entirely underclassmen, led by three sophomores: midfielder Dallas Aminzadeh and strikers Julian Saldana and Daniel Caballero, as well as junior Bush Yormie.

It was a battle of the Norths last night:  Northwood, North Hagerstown and the north wind.  The winds probably took the match but the score of 1-0 assured Northwood another game in bracket play.   Northwood will move on to play Clarksburg in the semi-final match.  Congratulations to our Gladiator champions.  A few game photos can be seen here.

Excerpt from today's (10/29) Gazette:

Clarksburg 1, Winters Mill 0

As the 2A West Region's No. 1-seed, the Coyotes (10-2-1) held serve with a nip-tuck second-round victory, courtesy of striker Peabo Doue's 15th goal of the season. The West Virginia commit ran down the left flank as center midfielder Dillon Muise played the ball to Doue in space for an easy finish. Muise's assist was his 15th on the year.

"Overall, I was extremely pleased with our effort," said Clarksburg coach Jeremy Spoales. "Dillon to Peabo; it's pretty much the way it's been all season."

The Coyotes next face No. 2 seed Northwood in the regional semifinals.

2A West boys soccer: Home to an abnormally deep field

by Dan Greenberg | Staff Writer

It's playoff season in boys soccer: the time to separate the men from the boys, the contenders from the pretenders. With the Class 2A West Region draw taking place Monday and first-round games tentatively set for this Friday, it's also time to discuss top candidates to win what is, surprisingly, one of the toughest brackets in the state.

"I mean, it's a very, very tough region," said Clarksburg coach Jeremy Spoales. "Middletown is the top seed; they've got a kid named Chase Nichols who is terrific. Then you've got Liberty, who was just an overtime penalty kick away from winning the state final last year. Then you've got Walkersville, and they have a kid named Matia Mellello, who committed to George Washington. So it's a tough, balanced region."

As tough as Middletown and some of the other Frederick County teams may be, the team to beat from Montgomery County is Clarksburg. In just their third year of existence, the Coyotes have had a phenomenal year, finishing 9-1-1, winning the Montgomery 3A/2A/1A West Division championship, and outscoring opponents 33-10 through Friday's games.

The leader has been West Virginia University commit Peabo Doue, who has scored 13 goals on the season. But his bigger coup may be the nine assists he's accumulated, many to Dylan Muise (5 goals). A senior center midfielder, Muise also leads the team with 12 assists.

Clarksburg doesn't have any holes, which makes its postseason outlook bright.

Northwood has followed a similar path to the top. It will be the third seed in the draw, having just as significant a season as the Coyotes, tying for the 3A/2A/1A East Division title with an 8-1-2 record.

Like their third-year partners at the varsity level, the Gladiators are allowing the fewest goals (eight) in their division, led by senior goalkeeper Eric Swarth. But it's been the additions of sophomore DeMatha transfers Dallas Aminzadeh and Julian Saldana to the midfield, along with junior center middie Bush Yormie, that make them legit contenders.

Boys soccer midseason report

What's happening in boys soccer? Who knows?

by Dan Greenberg | Staff Writer
What makes soccer so great is the unexpected; no matter who's the better team, all it takes is one bounce, one great play to change the complexion of a game. That very same principle is what has made the 2008 boys soccer season so fun.

At this time a year ago, there were more knowns. Class 4A Magruder was unbeaten en route to a perfect season, Clarksburg was far and away the best 2A team in the county, and Bethesda-Chevy Chase was showing signs of its division, region and state championships to come in 3A. But with this year's regional playoff seeding meeting set for Oct. 18, there are no overwhelming favorites, only a plethora of contenders.

That's because of several surprises that have brought parity to the county fields. And no one has been as surprising as Northwood, which currently tops the 3A/2A/1A East standings at 5-1-1 (4-0-1 in the division). The Gladiators are led by a pair of DeMatha transfers, sophomores Julian Saldana — who scored game-winning goals against Seneca Valley and Paint Branch — and center midfielder Dallas Aminzadeh.

The Gladiators' nemesis is still 3A/2A/1A West Division-leading Clarksburg (6-1-1, 3-0-1), which gave Northwood its only loss (3-0 on Sept. 15) and still may be the slight favorite in 2A thanks to West Virginia-bound striker Peabo Doue. But the gap has shrunk.

"That Peabo, he's got our number; that kid just ripped us up," said Gladiator coach Kurt Logsdon. "But we can hang with the best of them right now. Tying B-CC was our biggest coup, I think."

The defending 3A state-title winners might even be a stronger team than they were a year ago. The Barons' most important pieces — striker David Williams and midfielders Chris Woodruff and Ethan White (Maryland) — have buoyed a 5-1-3 start, while senior Willy Koue leads the team in goals.

The county sent two other teams to state-championship games a year ago, both of which are thriving once again.

Poolesville (3-1-4) fell a game short of a 1A title, but looks even stronger this season. Led by strikers Jeyson Ventura and Matt Capozzi, the Falcons boast almost a 2-to-1 goal-scoring advantage over opponents.

And while Magruder doesn't have the firepower of a year ago, when it set a school record with 85 goals, no one has beaten it yet. Led by versatile senior Ifiok Akpandak and two-year starter Steve Magliaro in net, the Colonels are one of just two unbeaten teams in the county (6-0-3).

"We don't look the same on the field," said Magruder coach Steve Pfeil. "No one can dispute that. What we're trying to do is win the right way."

The county's other unbeaten team has been its most dominant. Churchill (7-0-1) has scored the most goals (28) and allowed the fewest (4), primarily by owning the middle of the field at all three levels; center mid Max Rutherford and defensive stalwart Jamie LaFleur are superb, but striker Kevin Dansky is doing unimaginable things up top. Through eight games, he's scored 19 goals.

"He's very quick, which is more important than being just fast," said Churchill head coach Arnold Tarzy. "It's just like ‘Boom,' he's on the ball."

Boys Soccer 2008

Top teams: Churchill (7-0-1), Magruder (6-0-3)

Best offense: Churchill. In two words, Kevin Dansky; the dynamic senior striker has scored 19 of the team's 28 goals. Through Oct. 7, only one team (Blair) has outscored him.

Best defense: Magruder. The Bulldogs have been the stingiest on the stat sheet, but the Colonels are still unbeaten because of their defense, led by all-around seniors Ifiok Akpandak and Jeremy Moyer, and goalkeeper Steve Magliaro

Pleasant surprise (individual): Willy Koue, B-CC. The Barons won a 3A state championship a year ago because of a lot of players, but the senior forward wasn't one of them. Yet he has come out of nowhere to lead the team in goals through nine games.

Pleasant surprise (team): Northwood. Simple: no one felt the Gladiators would be leading the 3A/2A/1A East Division a week into October.

Playoff darkhorse: Walter Johnson. It's just hanging around at 6-2, solid up top and in the back, and look very reminiscent of the Wildcat team that earned a 2006 co-state championship.

Northwood moves to first place in its division!
A tie with B-CC in double overtime cinches the number one spot in
3A/2A/1A East

The Northwood Boys Varsity Soccer team knew that B-CC would be a crucial and tough game. Last year's divisional state champions B-CC are well-respected for their talented and disciplined play. The Gladiators arrived at the Bethesda campus at full-strength with returning forward Daniel Caballero and Dallas Aminzadeh (who had to sit out the Poolesville game due to a red card). Both teams played a spirited first half with some excellent ball handling by both sides. Midway through the first half B-CC scored first when a crack in the Northwood defensive line allowed a goal to elude the keeper. Down by one, the Gladiators returned with their now characteristic second period intensity. Caballero was able to tie the score with a well-timed kick. For the remainder of regulation time both the Barons and the Gladiators traded opportunities including several heart-stopping bullets by B-CC that hit the post. In a replay of Wednesday's game against Poolesville, the game was forced into overtime which ran its full course with neither team scoring. The game ended with an official tie. The Barons displayed great skill, terrific coaching and some of the best sportsmanship of any team that Northwood has played this year. With great relief and respect, the Gladiators move into first place of their division with this tie--a first for Northwood and an incredible achievement for our team and school. Still to come, Northwood heads north again to face Seneca Valley on Tuesday and is back home on Friday to host (from all reports) a very good team from Kennedy.(game photos here )

Northwood Hangs Tough in Poolesville

Tito's Goal puts Northwood on the scoreboard

The Northwood Gladiators took the long bus ride to Poolesville and faced the formidable Falcons in a contest that ended in a double-overtime tie. After a scoreless first half the Falcons went up by a goal. The Gladiators responded when a free kick by Tito sailed through the hands of the Poolesville goalie. Poolesville struck again when some disorganized defense allowed the ball to be headed in. It looked grim for the Gladiators until Bush Yormie sent a perfectly placed free kick into the Falcon's goal. Determined efforts by both teams in the final minutes of regulation yielded no additional scores so the game went into regulation overtime. Ten minutes later there was still no score so the second regulation began. Again, both teams struggled to convert but could not. The final whistle was blown just as Taylor was about to serve in a corner kick. Although another win would obviously have been terrific the Gladiators headed back to Silver Spring with their first tie of the season. The toughest and most crucial game of their regular season awaits them on Friday as they will meet the BCC Barons (last year's divisional champions). The Gladiators hope to be a full strength with the return of injured Daniel C. Go Gladiators!

Northwood celebrates win over Wheaton and their lead in the 3A/2A/1A East Division

The Northwood Gladiators faced one of the toughest teams not only in their division but most likely in the county when they took the field at Wheaton. The Knights have shown themselves to be fierce and talented competitors against some of the division's better teams. Strong, fast, and skilled the Knights kept the pressure on the Northwood squad all night. The Gladiators scored mid-way through the first half on a corner kick that was punched into the goal by sophomore Daniel Shaffer. Terrific defense by goalie Evan Swarth and his tough defensive wall Bush Yormie , Alfredo Solano, Taylor D'Ottavi and Daniel Shaffer helped to thwart the Knights numerous advances on the goal.  It was a great night of soccer by both teams. Game Photos posted  here.

Gladiators win over Paint Branch: 1-0

Playing without four of their usual starters, the Northwood Gladiators faced a talented and tough Paint Branch team. The Panthers dominated the first half using the field and their speed to move the ball. Substituting as Keeper, Alfredo had a busy first half guarding the goal against frequent Panther shots. Coming out of a scoreless first half, the Gladiators seemed better organized and more energized. A thrilling break-away by Julian resulted in the only goal of the game. The Gladiators hope to have some of their injured warriors back on the field when they travel to Wheaton on Wednesday.

Clarksburg Coyotes Spoil Gladiator's Home Opener
Playing under a full moon on the newly sodded Northwood field, the Clarksburg Coyotes showed the predator instinct and shut down the Gladiators 3-0. With a header goal in the opening five minutes of the game, the Coyotes went on to play a fierce passing game and excellent defense. The Gladiators will have less than 48 hours to reflect on the loss as they travel to Paint Branch on Wednesday to take on the Panthers.

GLADIATORS COME ALIVE IN SECOND HALF TO DEFEAT BLAKE 4:1

Sophomore Daniel Caballero kicked off the season with a hat trick

notching one goal in the first half and 2 more in the second. Also in the second half, Edgar Ramirez blasted the ball into the back of the net in Northwood's opening game of the 2008 season against Blake. Photos of both the JV and Varsity games can be viewed here.
