Gazette article on game with Clarksburg

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE NORTHWOOD GLADIATORS VARSITY SOCCER TEAM WHO BEAT THE ODDS AND PROGRESSED TO THE QUARTER FINALS OF THE 2-A WEST DIVISION. IT'S BEEN A TERRIFIC SEASON AND THE SOCCER GLADIATORS HAVE EVERY REASON TO HOLD THEIR HEADS HIGH. WE'RE PROUD OF YOU! WE ARE NORTHWOOD.

Images from the quarterfinal game here.
A PHOTO TRIBUTE TO OUR LOYAL FANS THIS SEASON!

We are Northwood..and we're going to the next level!
NORTHWOOD: 2
WALKERSVILLE:1

10-30: The number one seed in our bracket (2-A West), Walkersville, was knocked out of the play-offs by the Northwood Gladiators tonight. Playing an intensive defensive game the Gladiators were able to keep the Walkersville Lions from their goal until the final seconds. Both Gladiator goals were achieved on free kicks by Juan and Yahir. The Gladiators move on to the quarter-finals facing Clarksburg on Thursday, November 1st. at 7 pm at Clarksburg. GO GLADIATORS!!!

10/29: NORTHWOOD PREVAILED IN OVERTIME AGAINST FRANCIS SCOTT KEY AND MOVED ON TO NEXT LEVEL OF BRACKET PLAY.
TUESDAY THE GLADIATORS TAKE A LONG BUS RIDE TO WALKERSVILLE FOR THE NEXT PLAYOFF GAME.

9/23: Although it would have been nice to end the regular season with a win, the Gladiators can hold their heads high for a solid game against rival Blair and an impressive overall season record. Next up is the first game of bracket play against Carrol County's Francis Scott Key High School. Go Gladiators!! A few game (and Blair Senior Night) photos from Blair mom, Annie Mozer, can be seen here.

>Senior night and a rose for Mom...
10/16: There were several touching moments as seniors presented their mothers with roses after the game with Poolesville and for those whose mothers weren't at the field, fellow gladiators filled in to offer comfort...
Game photos can be seen here.

10/12: The Gladiators posted their first tie of the season against the Richard Montgomery Rockets. Playing without Sal Saar who sustained a season-ending injury in the Kennedy game, the team struggled to find openings in the RM mid-field. Strong support from the Gladiator defense keep the Rockets from launching a goal as the game went into regulation overtime and was finally called due to darkness on the unlighted field. Next up is Poolesville on Tuesday at home. Slideshow of game can be seen here.

Congratulations to Gladiator Evan Swarth, Prince of Homecoming and Guardian of the Goal!

10/8: ALL HAIL THE GLADIATORS!!! The Gladiators played an exciting game against the Kennedy Cavaliers with three goals contributed by three different team members, some terrific defense and numerous great saves by goalie Evan Swarth. The Gladiators emerged with a 3-0 victory and a current record 5-4-0.

Northwood Gladiators vs. Kennedy Cavaliers

10/04: Tied until the final 40 seconds BCC emerged with a win just when the game looked like it would go into overtime. The Gladiators played a great game against a very skilled and determined BCC. Although a win would have been great, the Gladiators showed that they are a team to be reckoned with! Keep up the great work and thanks to all the loyal fans (including Principal Johnson) who showed up at the game. Slideshow of grainy photos taken in the dark (!) can be seen here.

10/01: The Gladiators took on Seneca Valley's Screaming Eagles in a game that provided few highlights for either side. Seneca's win came off a questionable call that resulted in a penalty kick and a sloppy goal that took advantage of some disorganized Northwood defense and the ever-present field dust storm. The Gladiators return to the Northwood arena to play BCC powerhouse this Thursday at 7 p.m. We need more crowd noise!!! WE ARE NORTHWOOD!! GO GLADIATORS!!

NORTHWOOD IN THE NEWS AGAIN - THIS WEEK'S GAZETTE TALKS ABOUT OUR GAME WITH SENECA VALLEY AND OUR OVER-ALL PERFORMANCE THIS SEASON.

Some really nice shots of the Wheaton and Einstein games taken by Tyler's mom can be seen here.

Gladiators vs. Wheaton Knights /Gladiators vs. Einstein Titans

9/26: True to their name, the Einstein Titans proved to be a formidible challenge for the Gladiators. With a solid defense that keep the Northwood strikers from the goal and a strong and fast front line, the Titans scored early in the game and then again in the second period. The Gladiators were able to prevent a shut-out thanks to a penalty kick by Juan. The Gladiators hope to get back on the winning track with a Monday home game vs. Seneca Valley. Game photos below in slide show format or available in album form here.

Gladiators boast their 4-1 record after an overtime victory against the Wheaton Knights.

9/24: The Gladiators fought an epic battle against the Wheaton Knights that sent the soccer warriors into an overtime quest for victory. After a strong start in the first period in which Northwood notched two goals quickly (by Juan and Bush), the Knights fought back and scored before the half. The second half was an intense and sometimes combustible battle in which Wheaton won a penalty kick putting the score at 2-2. In the mid-afternoon heat and dust, each team scored again sending the game into OT. A determined Gladiator team dominated the overtime and with Sal's header off a corner kick the victory was secured and the Gladiators celebrated their 4-1-0 season.

Sal's header eludes the goalie and brings the Gladiators' their 4th victory of the season.

9/19: Rebounding from a disheartening loss the afternoon before, the Gladiators came back to the home field and proved that their strong beginning was not a fluke. Against an impressive front line from Paint Branch, Northwood dominated with crisp passes, solid defense, and spirited team work. When the dust cleared (and there was plenty of it on the field), Northwood recorded its first shutout of the season and the Gladiators' third win in four games. Goals scored by Sal (2) and Juan (1). Game photos can be viewed on the Gladiator Varsity Soccer photo site.

Juan scoring the first goal of the game.
More photos of Paint Branch game by their photographer.

9/18: The Gladiators played a tough game at Clarksburg against a team that features two former Bethesda Roadrunners star players (Julio and Peabo). The Clarksburg team came out fast and scored two goals in the first half. The Gladiators rallied in the second period and did not allow Clarksburg to score again. However, despite several opportunities, the Gladiators were unable to find the back of the net before the final whistle. Heads up, boys, two wins and a loss is not a bad start to the season!

Go Gladiators!
