“ALL STUDENTS CAN BE LEADERS” at NGHS

The following are just a few of the authentic leadership opportunities available for students.  North Gwinnett is a great incubator for student-led change and positively influencing others.

Peer Tutors

NGHS adult contact:  Mr. Anthony Smith

Any student is encouraged to participate.

Our extended lunch time allows for academic interventions including peer tutoring.  All students are encouraged to consider tutoring in their academic area of strength during a portion of their lunchtime a couple days a week. It does not require the entire lunch period; tutors will have the remaining 25 minutes of lunch to eat. Tutors may record their service hours on their NGHS Community Service Logs (available in the Guidance Office or online).  Students may sign up to be a tutor by going to http://www.peertutors.northgwinnett.com   For more information, see the Peer Tutors link under the “Leadership and Service” section under the “Activities” tab on the NGHS website.

Freshman Mentoring

NGHS adult contact:  Ms. Kim Stewart

Any junior or senior may apply in the spring

Freshman Mentors commit to serving as role models and helping freshmen feel as a valued part of NGHS through their motto:  “They won’t care what you know until they know that you care.”  They meet with their small group of freshmen during advisement time every Tuesday and Thursday with a goal of helping them be academically, behaviorally, and socially successful.  Freshman Mentors hold Lunch & Learn meetings to discuss lesson plans, to celebrate successes, and to dialogue about possible improvements.  The curriculum incorporates the following themes:  knowing yourself as a leader, setting ethical leadership, developing dynamic habits, communicating effectively, and the importance of establishing a mission and vision.  Beyond the leadership curriculum, mentors act as peer advocates and an extra support system through their advice and guidance.  They are often called upon to consult with visiting schools who want to learn how to implement peer mentor programs at their own schools.

Leadership Lecture Series

NGHS adult contact:  Mr. Ed Shaddix

Any student is encouraged to participate.

See any adult supervisor in the lunchroom to get involved in developing the student-led leadership lecture series held during each lunch. Students' voices are so valuable in creating positive change and making a school the best it can be. This year's theme is "Service to your nation, Service to your community, and Service to your school," and it will be led by various community members and students of North Gwinnett as the year progresses.

Bulldog Ambassadors

NGHS adult contact:  Ms. Kim Stewart

Any student is encouraged to participate.

In an effort to help our students new to NGHS, Bulldog Ambassadors facilitate a smooth transition for these new students so that they find success and support at our school.  Students who are interested in serving in this role may contact Ms. Stewart in the Curriculum Office.  (Beginning January 2009)

Gwinnett Student Leadership Team (GSLT)

NGHS adult contacts:  Ms. Kirsten Baker & Ms. Teresa Siebenbruner

Sophomores:  Application & Interview Process in the spring

After an application and interview selection process, three seniors and three juniors are selected to represent NGHS at the monthly county-wide student leadership training sessions held at the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce. Students’ junior year involves learning leadership principles while their senior year focuses on implementing positive change for school improvement at their local schools.  They help create lesson plans and training sessions for our Freshman Mentors, organize new student support, develop leadership lecture series for all students, and are a part of the North Gwinnett Student Leadership Team (NGSLT).

North Gwinnett Student Leadership Team (NGSLT)

NGHS adult contact:  Ms. Kim Stewart

Sophomores & juniors:  Application & Interview Process in the spring

The North Gwinnett Student Leadership Team works together to spread leadership by creating attainable leadership opportunities for all students. The NGSLT embodies integrity, patience, discipline, teamwork, and care for others. We facilitate staff and students and make sure that no one gets left behind. Our vision is for all students to get involved in at least one leadership organization offered at North.

InterClub Council

NGHS adult contact:  Ms. Tamaiko Chappell

One student representative per NGHS organization

The inter-club council is a new initiative at North Gwinnett. Its main focus is to unite the various clubs and extracurricular activities at our school in hopes of expanding on service projects and fundraising for causes such as Relay for Life. The club also serves as a means of bettering communication among the large number of organizations and sports teams, thereby promoting school and community events and increasing school involvement and spirit.

EMERGE

NGHS adult contact:  Mr. Reuben Gresham

Any student is encouraged to participate.

EMERGE is a leadership initiative designed to facilitate leadership to all students at NGHS.   In our society today, there is statistical data that supports the issues of young minority men and women not going to college, not getting involved in higher advanced placement courses, and local school leadership programs.  Our goal is to invoke change in the societal mindset of our young minority students, and begin to positively embed the mission and vision for leadership and academics at NGHS.  With this charge, our student leadership council is excited for the opportunities EMERGE can offer to all students through leadership lecture series, college visits, academic and empowerment workshops, and extra-curricular activity involvement.

Hispanic Students’ Leadership Initiatives

NGHS adult contact:  Ms. Heather Carr, Ms. Teresa Perez, Ms. Kristin Rios, Ms. Kim Stewart

Any student is encouraged to participate.

Last year the Hispanic Student Association received a charter to become an official NGHS club. This year students interested in the association have come together to begin discussing leadership opportunities available to Hispanic students in our school. Four committees were created in which the students promote the importance education and opportunities in our school and community. Through the leadership outreach committee the students have offered their guidance to the cluster schools of NGHS. The students have also worked on organizing a panel of different Hispanic associations that represent colleges around metro-Atlanta. All Hispanic Student Association members have been provided the opportunity to become academic lunch tutors and freshman mentors.

Korean Student Association

NGHS adult contact:  Ms. Yvette Kim

Any student is encouraged to participate.
The Korean Student Association is a support system open to all Korean students at NGHS. Members tutor and mentor each other in both English and Korean for effective communication. Committees within the club specialize in culture and language classes for members. KSA also offers biannual parent conferences that allow members and parents to learn about colleges, AP courses, scholarships, and need to know opportunities for success.

Peer Leadership

NGHS adult contacts:  Ms. Kim Geer & Ms. Gina Vines

Seniors:  Applications available during registration

Peer leadership is a class that student-leaders may apply to take their senior year which gives them the opportunity to rotate among NGHS offices and classrooms. They serve as our student ambassadors, giving school tours to new students and parents upon enrollment, and are trained to conduct peer mediations. They choose the offices or classrooms in which they are assigned. This year, many are assisting in special education classrooms, with our ESOL students, and in our clinic.

North Gwinnett High School Student Leadership Summit @ NGHS

Any student is encouraged to attend.

Last summer, NGHS held our first Student Leadership Summit created by the students, for the students.  Any NGHS student who was interested in learning more about student leadership, getting involved at NGHS, and meeting other student leaders were encouraged to attend.  This event included breakout sessions, group leadership training, student fellowship, and collaboration between student leaders and faculty. The summit will help students be prepared to lead in any forum. The event was a success, so plan to attend the 2009 NG Leadership Summit (date TBA)!

Gwinnett County Student Leadership Summit @ the Gwinnett Center

Any student is encouraged to participate.

Each May, the Gwinnett Student Leadership Team hosts a one-day leadership summit at the Gwinnett Civic Center. The summit features nationally recognized speakers as well as important members from the community, and students learn about various aspects of leadership by attending breakout sessions throughout the day. The day is completed with a school session in which the students get to meet with the adult leaders to brainstorm various topics of importance at North Gwinnett, such as the peer mentoring program and the new inter-club council. North Gwinnett continually has the largest number of students who attend the Summit, with 75 participating last year!
