| UVSA was founded in 2002, originally known as the United Vietnamese Student Organizations (UVSO), an alliance of high school Vietnamese groups. Today UVSA aims to be the representative organization for Vietnamese students across Northern California. Its goal is to be a network for which students and groups can leverage their own goals and activities through mutual collaboration. Thus, its agenda is democratically driven. The structure of UVSA can be broken down into four areas: the Executive Board, the Intercollegiate Council, the General Staff, and the Board of Advisors. In order to enhance this collaboration, we recognize that the role for the Vietnamese Student Associations (VSA) are to be the representative student body for each campus. Each VSA has one representative within the Intercollegiate Council (ICC). The ICC has legislative powers within UVSA, i.e. determine the policy and direction of UVSA, and serve as the principal bridge among all VSAs in terms of communication and activities. The Executive Board oversee day-to-day UVSA affairs, and consists of elected officers. They handle much of the legal and financial paperwork, but also appoint General Staff to carry out certain projects or assist the ICC with their programming. The Executive Board is accountable to the ICC. The General Staff includes Committees that oversee specific projects. In order to accommodate the growing number of projects in the future, the General Staff is organized through a Commission System in which students of similar skills and interests can collaborate across schools in their field. It can be comprised of VSA officers, VSA members, or even youths who are no longer or never were part of their applicable VSAs. The Commissioners are responsible for maintaining contact with relevant community groups and to monitor projects and activities over the entire region. Finally, the Board of Advisors are former UVSA members and prominent community leaders. Not only do they advise the Executive Board, but also the Commissioners. Their duty is to ensure that the mission of UVSA is carried out faithfully, and to support UVSA within the community.
