Me

This is me in Shanghai in May. I didn't actually steal the bike. But I did want to ride one. To me cycling, and it's intergration into the urban-scape is a critical indication of the health of a civilisation.

But that is maybe not what you came here for?

In the South Pacific Ocean is a collection of islands known collectively as Aotearoa/New Zealand. I was fortunate to be born in the early 1970's in the centre of the most northerly one and reside for most of my life, so far, between Wellington in the north and Christcurch and Wanaka in the wild and beautiful South Island.

In order to understand me it is important to understand a small amount about where I come from: New Zealand is a small country with a small and close community of people. If you don't know somebody - you almost certainly know their brother or their neighbor. It is a very egalitarian society, we have no time for class systems and people are judged on their behaviour and skills. New Zealand is also pretty much as far as you can get from the main world centres and historically there has been a culture of making do, flexibility and ingenuity.

My professional life has revolved around being the entrepreneurial and creative spirit behind starting a number of small businesses from outdoor equipment design and manufacture to cafes, industrial abseiling, web development and property investment. This has often required learning new skills on the fly and morphing to fit new environments.

I enjoy working. I love a creative project with good people in almost any discipline.

I have hired enough people to know that it is risky business. I would hire myself if I was looking for the following...

  • A creative and ingenious person who, if inspired, would commit 100% to the project at hand
  • A broad range of skills and life experience with the ability to learn on the fly
  • A person with the ability to assess their own skills and outsource when required for greater efficiency and improved project outcomes
  • Some fun
