Yucuninu - Dance Development

Choreographed by Alicia Díaz   Filmed by Alison Dobbins

Yucuninu: The Development of a Dance follows the creative process and evolution of a work by Alica Díaz, co-director of Agua Dulce Dance Theater and the current Artist-in-Residence at the School of Theater and Dance at Kent State University. The basis for the dance is a solo work composed in 2001, which will now be adapted for a trio. The dance centers on the idea of three women praying for strength and guidance during a difficult time. It is inspired in part by the Mixtec poem “Yunu Yucu Ninu” interpreted by the Mexican-American singer Lila Downs. The poem is a tribute to a tree that nourishes a community, and maintains its beauty and strength even as it is forgotten by its guardians. The piece is a physical exploration of rising and falling in a contained space. In the process of adapting the work for a trio, Alicia explores environments outside the studio. The trees, valleys, and nature of Kent, Ohio are woven into the dance as Alicia and the dancers translate nature to the stage.
